Productive cough: You should know that

If you feel a pressure in your chest, cough up mucus, or feel that the mucus has built up in your airways or chest, and can hear a whistling or hissing sound when you breathe, then you have this type of cough. A productive or wet cough is the result of an accumulation of thick mucus, which can have three colors: white, yellow and green.

The body will always try to remove the mucus, and it does so by coughing. The symptoms of a productive cough are:

  • Persistent cough.
  • Sticky mucus that comes up when you cough.
  • Whistling sound when you cough or breathe.
  • Sense of density.
  • Congestion or heaviness in the chest.
  • Excessive cough in the morning.

As mentioned above,  the mucus can have three different colors, so it is necessary to pay attention and know what it may be due to:

  • If it is clear or transparent, it is usually mucous.
  • If it is yellow, it is due to an immune reaction against inflammation in the airways.
  • If it is green, there is a serious bacterial infection, such as bronchitis.
  • If it is brown, it is due to smog and air pollution.
  • If it is gray, it is due to cigarette smoke.
  • If it is pink, it is due to asthma.
